That’s why our jewelry will always be both beautiful and safe. - These words were spoken by Karl Blomdahl, the founder of Blomdahl, a Swedish company that designs and produces hypoallergenic skin-friendly jewelry and devices for safe ear and nose piercing.
• Creating beautiful jewelry is a complicated art. Creating beautiful jewelry that is skin-friendly is even more difficult. Sometimes I feel like we are making the impossible possible - says Karl Blomdahl.

In 1985, Karl started working at his father Lars Blomdahl's company in Halmstad. Together, they began to innovate, largely based on Lars's many years of experience. The motivation to seek new solutions was driven by two main medical issues: nickel allergy and AIDS. In search of safe solutions, they developed the world's first ear-piercing earring made of pure medical plastic with zero (0%) nickel content.

But nickel allergy was not the only danger faced by those who wanted pierced ears in the 1980s. Lars and Karl, realizing the drawbacks and dangers posed by the ear-piercing devices and techniques of that time, sought solutions that would avoid the risk of infection through contact with blood from viral diseases such as AIDS or hepatitis B. Drawing on the standards in healthcare, they developed a safe, hygienic ear-piercing system - Blomdahl. Blomdahl was the first in the world to use a sterile, single-use cartridge with an earring and plug for ear piercing.

- We have always focused on creativity and made sure to look ahead with our ideas. Sometimes even a little too far - says Karl.

MEDICAL STANDARDS

From the very beginning, Blomdahl has cared about both style and safety. Jewelry should be both beautiful and skin-friendly and healthy for those who wear it. This requires consistency at the planning and production stages, as well as a system of independent quality control.

- Not everyone succeeds in this. Usually, it ends up being a compromise between quality and keeping costs low. That is something we will never do - says Karl.

Blomdahl, in caring for safety, often applies higher standards than those currently required. Therefore, even though the law does not currently require it, the company has undergone an audit and received a certificate confirming compliance with the standards applicable to the production of medical products ISO 13485.

PROTECTING CUSTOMERS

Blomdahl collaborates, among others, with dermatologists from the Skåne University Hospital in Malmö, Sweden. This allows the company to stay updated on the results of research on the toxicity of various materials. This knowledge enables the selection of safe materials for jewelry production, even ahead of existing legal standards.

Jewelry, in addition to nickel, may also contain other allergens such as cobalt, palladium, gold, chromium, epoxy resins, and acrylates. Additionally, it may also contain toxic substances such as lead and cadmium, as well as carcinogenic substances like formaldehyde. Aware of the enormous responsibility for the health of customers, Blomdahl uses only carefully selected materials for jewelry production: pure medical plastic and pure medical titanium.

THE RIGHT PEOPLE

The right people, in the right place, are essential for the successful realization of noble ideals.

Blomdahl is a family company, currently employing 35 people who contribute their knowledge and commitment to its continuous development.

- Strength comes from within. We love beautiful jewelry and are proud that we make it completely differently than others. We are motivated by the awareness that thanks to us, customers can finally wear jewelry without any problems - says Nina Andersson, who is responsible for product design and development.

The staff consists mainly of women, many of whom are also mothers. Some have issues with nickel allergies. The employees represent many potential customer groups. Therefore, new ideas and new jewelry models are tested by the staff and their families, who provide valuable feedback and suggestions.

- Our children are our biggest critics. Nothing brings us more joy than knowing that they like our designs - says Nina.

ONLY BLOMDAHL

The design of our jewelry is classic and stylish. From elegant pearls or decorative stones to more cheerful shapes like hearts or flowers. However, regardless of the design of the earrings, all parts that come into contact with the skin must be made of skin-friendly materials. This requires a lot of manual work and precision. For example, to achieve earrings in gold, silver, or black, only those parts that do not have direct contact with the skin are plated.

- In the world of jewelry, this is something unique. It is also very costly. However, we are constantly motivated to act by the belief that our work is important for the health of many people, both now and in the future - says Karl Blomdahl.

 

STERILE AND SAFE

Our method of safe ear piercing has been developed with the principles of modern aseptics used in healthcare in mind, to prevent infection during the procedure. The sterile method guarantees that the piercing procedure is hygienic and safe.

SKIN-FRIENDLY MATERIALS, EVEN FOR PEOPLE WITH ALLERGIES

Our ear-piercing earrings have been developed in consultation with dermatologists. Blomdahl earrings can also be worn by people who already have some allergies, as they are made of medical plastic with zero (0%) nickel content or pure medical titanium. The decorative part of the earring, which does not come into direct contact with the body, can be plated in gold or silver.
